Week in short

It’s been a very beachy week. The weather has been warm and beautiful, my first exam is over in ENG Statistics, and in general life is good. This week went something like this:

Monday: Take stats exam and have a headache after work. Take a 4 hour nap, headache goes away and we hit up Perkins for a late meal at 11:00 PM. I had a steak fajita, it was amazing.

Tuesday: Work is pretty normal. I find out I did pretty well on my stats exam (yay!). Weather is beautiful, so Nick and I hit up the beach on lake Superior. Water is the calmest I’ve ever seen on one of the great lakes, and it’s not too cold.

Wednesday: Another scorcher, at least for weather up here. Highs at around 87 F. Jarrod takes Nick and I out on his boat for some hardcore tubing. Afterwards, the whole gang and I get some drinks at one of the bars in Houghton. Good time. After afterwards, I head over to Nick’s house to resume drinking. We head out on bicycle to hit up a couple of beaches on the Portage Canal and do some more swimming. Very good time.

Thursday: Pretty warm again. Nick and I decide only the cool waters of Lake Superior can quench our desire to get out of the heat. We grab some pizza at Little Ceasars and have dinner on the beach. When we get there, clouds blow in and all the sudden the lake feels very cold. We head back to town to watch the rest of Josh’s softball game.

A pretty good week so far, if I do say so myself. Also, we met some people today at the beach that could lead to a very interesting weekend for me. And bonus points will be awarded to anyone who can tell my why I’m always the most sore 3 days after tubing. That’s all I’m going to say right now.

Pizza and Altiris

Well, hello again. I am happy to report that Track A of the summer semester is over, and thusly my classes linear algebra and diffy q. I only have 1 class for Track B, which is Engineering Statistics. So far the class has been pretty easy and I think I’ll be able to stay on top of it. We just got off of the short but very nice July 4th break. I spent most of the day sleeping in, out on the portage boating and tubing and in general hanging out with good friends. It was very nice.

At the office today we pooled together and bought pizzas. We end up ordering from Domino’s just about every week; they are just down the street and their pizzas are pretty tasty/prices are good. We ended up getting:

1 Large Philly cheese steak pizza – This pizza has got to be my favorite that Domino’s offers. We call it ‘The Fungus Pizza’ at work because it is decked out in mushrooms and peppers. It also has onions, steak and (I think swiss) cheese. Despite mushrooms being the only real fungus on it, the name sticks. Man I love this pizza.

1 Medium Supreme deep dish pizza – Man, all I can say is this pizza was disappointing. Normally I really like supreme pizzas, but in the words of Nick, ‘Something just tastes wrong about it.’ I don’t know what it was. I don’t like the Domino’s sausage very much; I’m sure that didn’t help. We won’t be ordering this one again, I would suggest a ham and pineapple as a good complement to the exceptional philly cheese steak.

Altiris is a new remote management suite we’ve been deploying at Aux over the last couple of weeks. The software is pretty neat, it includes full remote control of client machines, including PXE boot and WOL. Most of the appeal of the software is that it allows for extremely easy imaging of computers. We can also add software to a remote machine by dragging the software package onto the PC’s name in the console. We have to specially make (most) software packages by taking a snapshot of a base machine before and after installing the software on one of our testbed machines, but it is pretty straightforward. Everything Altiris can do can be scripted and scheduled, making it pretty powerful.

Crazy Week

Man, this week was a busy one. And it’s been way too long since I’ve posted here. I’ve been trying really hard to post at least once every 10 days, but it looks like I’ve missed that mark again. Anyway, I had ‘midterm’ exams in both linear algebra and differential equations this week. One was Monday and the other was Tuesday. I’m doing well in linear algebra, but diffy q is really kicking my butt. I should probably go and talk to the prof to see if I can get some help from him — yes it’s that bad. Finals for both classes are a week from today. If I want to pass diffy q (and believe me, I *really* want to pass it), it will require quite a bit of studying in the next week. I’m really not looking forward to it.

Anyway, exams and homework due for each of my classes botched up the beginning of my week. I’ve been on the ‘get up at 7:00 am – work/class till 4 pm – go home and take a nap 4:30 till 9 PM (tired from previous night/allergy meds knocking me out) – then staying up till 4 am mostly wasting time’ schedule or a variant of it for a lot of this week, and it just keeps going. There’s a pile of dirty dishes in the sink and stuff misplaced all throughout the apartment because I haven’t had the time to get to any of it. Anyway, I just had to vent for a bit. This side of my life doesn’t usually show it’s face in my blog, if only because updating the site is way at the bottom of my list of things to do.

It’s now the weekend thank goodness, and I’ll enjoy the chance to catch up on things around here and on sleep. Unfortunately next week looks like it’s going to be just as brutal. Hopefully get a better start on the week. I did take the time this evening to put about 30 miles on the motorcycle, that was nice. As sung by Freddie Mercury (Queen):

I gotta be cool relax, get hip
Get on my tracks
Take a back seat, hitch-hike
And take a long ride on my motor bike
